DIAGRAMMING POLITICS

At the International Conference for Artistic Research in Helsinki I presented a live drawing lecture, mapping out a political landscape that has witnessed the rise of right wing populism in an era of neoliberal crisis. Following Brexit and the US election, I drew on a range of political theories to broach questions of identity and representation with respect to individuals, communities, countries, networks and markets. From a basic pyramidal structure linking Power with aspirations to Security and Freedom I mapped out three distinct state forms which appeal to constituencies and relate to overarching ideologies.

The methodological approach combines the diagrammatic and the allegorical, premised on the notion that one thinks through drawing. The work is a proposition to engage with visual representation as a means for artists and researchers to analyze, compare, question and propose models of the political.

The work has been intitially presented as part of the Society for Artistic Reserach International Conference at the University of the Arts, Helsinki, April 2017
